Traveling to Ghana is an immersive experience as the country is rich in culture, heritage, and hospitality. As one of the leading charity organizations in Auburn, Georgia, we recruit volunteers to visit Ghana. This allows volunteers to live and interact with the local people. To prepare for the visit, there are several aspects of Ghana’s culture you must keep in mind.
Before visiting Ghana as part of our humanitarian services in Atlanta, Georgia, here are some cultural guidelines to keep in mind:
- Respect the elderly.
Ghanaian society is hierarchical. Hence, people are respected due to their age, wealth or position, and experience. Older people are viewed as wise and should be treated with respect. Hence, it’s important to show your respect for the eldest member present. - Use your right hand.
From an early age, many Ghanaians are taught that the left hand is used for cleaning themselves in the bathroom. Hence, using the left hand for eating and other activities is considered inappropriate. When doing actions like waving, eating, or handing an item to another person, be sure to use your right hand as a sign of respect. - Remember to greet others.
When taking part in a volunteer project in Ghana, be sure to greet others. Greetings are a big deal and it is considered rude not to greet others. When you enter a room, be sure to have a greeting ready and greet adults with a handshake, beginning with the person on the farthest right.
